This drive through the Boston Mountains is especially beautiful in the fall when the hardwood oak, hickory, and maple trees are in full color. Begin at Fayetteville and head south on I-49 to Fort Smith, continuing south on US-71. This remains a beautiful drive down through De Queen and all the way to Texarkana, just across the Texas border. Near the beginning of the drive you’ll pass over the treetops, while south of Fort Smith you will wander directly through the forest.

Scenic Drive Tips

Some wonderful camping spots along the way include Devil’s Den State Park, Springhill Campground, and Queen Wilhelmina State Park. Before starting the drive, check out Eureka Springs, a quaint little town in the hillsides northeast of Fayetteville. If you like to kayak or canoe, take another side trip from Eureka Springs to the Buffalo National River. At Mena, take a scenic diversion east on Highway 88 and enjoy a relaxing dip in the hot springs at Hot Springs National Park.
