This scenic loop through northern New Mexico can be done in one day, but we’d recommend taking your time to camp along the way, enjoy the fresh mountain air and the night skies, and take in the local culture and art. The loop begins in Taos, where you’ll head north toward Questa on Route 522. At Questa, you’ll head east on Highway 38 to Red River, a small mountain town with restaurants, shops, and RV campgrounds. Continue on over Bob Cat Pass to Eagle Nest, a tiny town in the Moreno Valley that offers gas stations, a few places to eat, and some shops, plus a number of RV campgrounds. Leaving Eagle Nest, travel south on Highway 64 and up over another mountain pass. You will come to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Near here, you can take a short side trip to Angel Fire, where you’ll find a ski resort, golfing, and at least one campground. Continuing on Highway 64 past Angel Fire will bring you down through the canyon and back to Taos, completing your loop.

Scenic Drive Tips

Northern New Mexico is a beautiful place to camp, hike, bike, fish, or ski, if you’re on a winter trip. Taos has many art galleries and historical museums, and lots of great food to enjoy! There are also nice state campgrounds between Questa and Red River, and in the canyon before you get back to Taos.
