The 113-mile Overseas Highway follows US Highway 1 through the Florida Keys to its southern end in Key West. Most of the route consists of bridges above the azure waters that separate the Atlantic Ocean from Florida Bay at the southern tip of the Florida peninsula, with crystal clear water from horizon to horizon. When the highway passes over the numerous islands, palm trees and mangrove trees line the shores. At the beginning of the fishing season for Caribbean spiny lobster, the surface of the water is peppered with the buoys of thousands of lobster traps.

Scenic Drive Tips

The speed limit is 45 miles per hour in most places or 55 miles per hour along some stretches, so there is plenty of time to enjoy the vast openness of the ocean.
