This scenic drive hugs the northern shore of Lake Superior, the world’s largest inland lake, for approximately 700 kilometres from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie. There is beautiful and interesting scenery all along this drive, including high cliffs reminiscent of the Maine coastline. Provincial parks like Lake Superior, Rainbow Falls, Sleeping Giant, Ouimet Canyon, and Kakabeka Falls as well as Pukaswa National Park provide plenty of opportunities to stop to camp and enjoy the outdoors.  Take your time, pull off the road often, and don’t be in a hurry.

Scenic Drive Tips

Visit Fort William Historical Park and the Terry Fox Memorial, both near Thunder Bay. Check out the goose statue in Wawa. Stop in any of the many scenic fishing villages along the Trans-Canada like Silver Islet at Sleeping Giant Park or charming Rossport. Stop at the many historic plaques along the way for information about the history of the greatest of all the Great Lakes. Visit the Soo locks and drive across the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Should you be eager for more, continue into Michigan and along Lake Superior’s south shore, which is flat with sandy beaches. While in Michigan, the trip should include a visit to the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Travel through Wisconsin takes you to the Apostle Islands National Park. The Minnesota segment travels through friendly towns and is a jumping off point to the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area.
