Starting in Silverton at 9,300 feet above sea level, this road is majestic from the get-go. The road climbs up to about 11,000 feet before descending down into a canyon and into Ouray. This drive takes just 25 minutes and is beautiful traveling either direction. A two-lane road with no guard rails to spoil the view, this one’s not for the faint-of-heart, but skies are almost always clear in the summer for incredible views. Go slow and take in the scenery!

Scenic Drive Tips

The road goes under a large concrete snow shed built to keep avalanches from sweeping cars off the road during the winter months. You can also choose to drive from Silverton to Durango instead of Ouray – this trip is almost as breathtaking, as you go up even higher before starting the descent down to Durango.
