Description
Lehto’s, just west of Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge along scenic U.S. 2, has been serving its version of the Cornish pasty brought here by miners since 1947. It’s only a genuine “hooper” pasty if the recipe includes rutabaga, and this one does, wrapped in a delicious puff-style pastry. Eat it there on outdoor tables or bring it with you to your campsite.

Pasties, what else? The original style, what else? Workers brought pasties into the Upper Peninsula’s copper and iron ore mines. Many kept them inside their helmets, and they had a hot, fast lunch or dinner.
Nearby Attractions
Straits State Park, or farther on, the Hog Island Country Store has been featured in print commercials, and it’s so cute. Farther on, the Hog Island State Forest Campground is a favorite. And farther on still, stop at the northernmost point in Lake Michigan at a highway rest stop. The Cut River Bridge takes the highway over a gorge. In Seney, please stop at the State Forest Campground, where Ernest Hemingway drew inspiration for one of his most famous short stories, The Big Two-Hearted River. Then mosey on to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and more pasties.
