One of the best ways to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Kentucky Bluegrass region is to get off of the major highways and travel the back roads. Drive under a canopy of trees past elegant horse farms and dry-laid limestone rock fences as you travel along Old Frankfort Pike, the 15.5 mile stretch of KY 1681 west of Lexington and one the most outstanding scenic byways in America. Turn onto Pisgah Pike (Highway 1967) for a beautiful 4.5-mile stretch between Old Frankfort Pike and US 60 that takes you past horse farms, creeks, and wildflowers, as well as landmarks like historic Pisgah Presbyterian Church (dating to 1784) and one of Lexington’s most unusual landmarks, “The Castle.” Take a left at US 60 to return to Lexington.
Scenic Drive Tips
Stop at the Headley-Whitney Museum of Art. Along Pisgah Pike, you will pass several horse farms including WinStar Farm, home of many champion horses. The Kentucky Castle is a 50-acre attraction that has been stopping tourists since the early 1970s.
