The Evergreen Leisure Travelers ventured to Prosser in sunny eastern Washington for a chance to explore a new area together.
Prosser is a small town near the Columbia River where fruit growing is at the heart of a mainly agricultural economy. We arrived at the Wine Country RV Park, where we set up base in our Unity IB for the few days of our trip. The Wine Country RV park was a friendly and immaculate RV park located in the center of Washington’s Wine Country in the sunny Lower Yakima Valley.
Mary Jane Musser, our chapter head, planned a range of activities within a walk or a short drive from the park, with time for everything including relaxation. We joined Mary Jane and Tom on Thursday afternoon and made a plentiful supper of hors d’oeuvres. Prosser is in a semi-arid climate so the heat of the day dissipated quickly while we visited.
Friday morning we all took our bicycles out for a ride, and headed north towards Sunnyside along a paved bike trail, then continued into historic downtown Prosser where we had a superb lunch at El Caporal, a recently opened Mexican restaurant. Following lunch, we biked home ready for a siesta!
That evening we were joined by another couple in a Unity IB like ours. Mary Jane grilled steak, Copper River salmon, and baked potatoes. She is an adventurous cook, bringing an abundance of good food from her Free Spirit van. The rest of us added salads to the meal and the conversation was non-stop as we shared travel stories.
Saturday morning we all boarded the RV park bus for a short drive to the weekly Prosser Farmer’s Market, which included live music, crafts, prepared foods, and luscious Bing and Rainier Cherries which were in season, fresh from the orchard. After an hour spent enjoying the Market the bus picked us up and took us to an alpaca farm just outside of town where we had what was surely the most informative introduction to alpacas in North America. I am an enthusiastic knitter and I left with four balls of soft alpaca yarn. The evening consisted of a short walk to a nearby restaurant for pizza.
Sunday morning we all contributed to a farewell breakfast of fruit, homemade cinnamon raisin apple bread and, thanks to Mary Jane, sausage, bacon, and scrambled eggs. All too soon we were exchanging hugs, wishing everyone safe travels, and hitting the road. Needless to say, we all look forward to the gathering next year.
