This is one of our getaway rallies planned in conjunction with another getaway rally, our Sedona RV Rally May 4-8. Most of us have seen the Grand Canyon before, but have you seen it by train? Our rally is scheduled to take advantage of the Steam Locomotive No. 4960 train ride on Saturday May 2. It runs just once a month. Other diesel powered trains run daily. Locomotive No. 4960 was built in 1923 by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia. It operated a freight and coal hauling service for the Midwestern Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q) railroad until the late 1950s and made its first official run on the Grand Canyon line in 1996. The RV park is conveniently located a short distance from the train station. Not enough registered by the February 1st deadline to qualify for the Group Rates so we are having to pay a few dollars more for individual registrations. RV rates per night, before discounts, excluding taxes, are: $39.99 for a back-in site or $44.99 for a pull-through site. We’ll stay 3 nights arriving Friday May 1st and departing Monday May 4th. Our plan is for everyone to take a 130 mile roundtrip locomotive train ride to the south rim departing Williams on May 2 at 9:30 am, arriving at the Grand Canyon at 11:45 am. We’ll have a picnic lunch, take a bus tour (optional) to do some sightseeing then depart the Grand Canyon by train at 3:30 pm returning to Williams by 5:45 pm. The bus tour is scheduled in coordination with train arrivals and departures at the rim so there is no worry about being back in time to catch the return trip to Williams. The bus tour goes to view points that, otherwise, are not accessible to those traveling by car. Please note, too, a kennel is available at the hotel to board pets.
