Historic Locations

This is just one example of the many national park memorial sites outside the parks that make history come alive. We were fascinated by the attention to detail that made the tragedy of the Johnstown Flood seem like a recent occurrence. The displays, artifacts, and films at each national parks site are geared to the history enthusiast, while entertaining those with lesser interest. We enjoyed our stay camping at the mature Laurel Hill State Park, just west of Somerset.

Nearby Attractions

“Nearby is the Flight 93 Memorial, another national park memorial site that is very well done, with an effective use of contemporary media. In addition, there are other state parks, Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, and Fort Necessity, a George Washington military campaign site. Our travels on this trip also included the quaint town of Ligioneer, Pennsylvania. The shops, restaurants, and restored fort were a welcome change of pace.”
