This drive takes Highway 108 through a beautiful part of California, with black oak trees covering the hills and miles of undeveloped land once you get past the farmlands of the central valley. As you climb into the foothills, small historic towns from the gold rush days dot the highway.

Pretty soon, you’ll find yourself up very high and looking down from between the pine trees. There are campgrounds on either side of the road, and it twists and turns up the mountainside until you reach the peak at the Sonora Pass.

Note that this isn’t an ideal drive for a larger RV and this route is closed during the winter months, so be sure to do some research in advance.

Scenic Drive Tips

Alicia’s Sugar Shack is a great place to start your day, just above Twain Harte, California. Pinecrest Lake and Dodge Ridge Ski Run are perfect for outdoor activities, and Strawberry has a grand music festival every year.

If you don’t go to Reno and want to experience more mountain driving, the route back through South Lake Tahoe is another great drive.
