Trail Start and End Details

The Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT) is about 28 miles long and parallels the C&O Canal Towpath for its entire length. The trail starts in Big Pool, ends at Little Orleans, and generally follows the Potomac River (West Virginia on the other side of the river). This paved, linear trail; is suited to anyone seeking a pleasant, leisurely outdoor experience–walking, running, biking, and inline skating. The easy grade and paved surface make this trail ideal for families, the elderly, and persons with limited mobility. The WMRT is wheelchair accessible. Pets are permitted on the trail.

Description and Tips

This trail is straightforward and nearly flat, with almost imperceptible and gentle grades. There’s also a tunnel. There are also camping, lodging, and bathroom facilities along the route.
