Description
“Three on two, no onion,” shouts the waiter, as the cook standing in front of rows of snap-when-you-bite natural casing hot dogs fills it and sends a plate sliding across the counter. That’s the song of the coney, the original dish served here and next door at Lafayette Coney Island since the early 1900s, seven days a week. Translation? It means three chili dogs on two plates, and of course, no onion, which I think is sacrilege, but oh well. If you’re coming to Detroit’s totally revived downtown restaurant scene, which features everything from Cuban to French and holds several James Beard Foundation nominations yearly, this is the place to start.
Menu Favorites
Coney dog with onions. No ketchup, mustard only. Or a “loose hamburger,” crumbled ground beef slathered with coney sauce and yes, onions
