It’s Mother Nature at it’s finest, in the Big Horn Mountains with deer and moose walking through the campground amid the Lodgepole Pines. Quiet, peaceful, and you can hear the waters of the crystal clear South Tongue River singing their song. The river was just across the road from our site. Dead Swede Campground is located off Forest Road 26 just off the Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 14) near the Burgess Overlook and Woodrock areas at an elevation of 8,400 feet.

Campground Tips

We were in site #19. Spacious, level, with beautiful huge lodgepole pines all around and beautiful rock formations as well. Site had picnic table, fire ring, and grill. We took our bikes and enjoying riding on the off road vehicle trails.

Nearby Attractions

Off-road vehicle trails, scenic jeep roads, hiking, fishing and canoeing are available in the surrounding area. Diverse hikes vary from loop trails to treks along creeks and over mountain peaks; many trails access the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Shell Falls Visitor Center, at the overlook of Shell Falls, is about 21 miles southwest. Beautiful waterfall! The Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite, near the town of Shell, is the largest of its kind in the state and one of only a few in the world from the Middle Jurassic Period. The tracks found here are approximately 167 million years old.
