Enjoy the majestic West Texas landscape on this quiet and peaceful drive from Fort Davis National Historic Site, up through the forests to the McDonald Observatory, then descending west to the plains and ending up at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. The loop is seventy miles of grand scenery, with ample picnicking sites along the way.
Scenic Drive Tips
Overnight stopping is allowed in rest areas, which are conveniently appointed with picnic tables and fireplaces. In addition to the Observatory, stop and hike at the Madera Canyon trail.
