Trail Start and End Details

Route of the Hiawatha runs from East Portal, Montana, to Pearson, Idaho. Find the main access seven miles east of Lookout Pass, off I90 at Taft Exit 5 in Montana.

Description and Tips

This is a rails-to-trails in a beautiful mountain setting that includes several tunnels (be sure to have bike or helmet lamps) as well as trestle bridges with incredible views. The trail is fine gravel and packed dirt, and educational placards can be found along the way. You can ride the trail both ways, but if you want to ride only downhill, there is a shuttle (included with your fee of $13 fee for adults and $9 for children) that can bring you and your bike back to the East Portal trailhead/parking lot. There are food and drink services at each end of the trail. Bike and helmet rentals plus other services can be found at Lookout Pass Ski Area a few miles away from the Portal, and the route is staffed with riders who will assist you in case of a tire puncture or other bike problems.
